The Difficulties Of Conducting A Thorough Pediatric Physical Exam

By Marissa Velazquez

Nobody wants anyone that they love and care for to be ill. Sick children, however, seem to cause their parents particular agony. Nobody wants a child to suffer and it is especially heart breaking to stand by without being able to do anything to make things better. Of course, the best course of action when a child becomes ill is to seek medical help immediately. A thorough pediatric physical exam may help to diagnose the problem quickly.

There are vast differences between the way adult patients and children are handled. Children often do not understand that they are ill. They become scared because they simply do not understand what it is that is happening to them and they do not understand that their parents are unable to help them. Pediatricians are trained to deal with young patients that are unable to answer questions rationally.

There are other reasons why children need to be treated by specialists. The bodies of children are constantly changing as they grow up and the correct diagnosis of ailments depends very much upon the developmental stage of the child. Treatment will also differ from that offered to adults, even if it is common ailment. Of course, there are certain medical conditions that are almost exclusively contracted by children.

One of the biggest challenges facing a pediatrician is the fact that the patient is often unable to provide useful information. They may be unable to point to the source of pain, for example and they often fail to understand the necessity of scary procedures such as injections or bodily examinations. They may squirm, cry and refuse to stay still. That is why it requires very special skills to deal with young children, babies and toddlers.

It is not only the young patients that can cause difficulties for the pediatrician. The parents are often obstructive. They are hesitant to give permission for some procedures and they are often in the way. In many cases they insist on second or even third opinions, thereby delaying urgent treatment. Pediatricians often spend almost as much time with the parents as with the patient.

Pediatricians go to great lengths to create a consulting atmosphere that will keep their patients calm and occupied. They offer toys and games to play with and they make sure that they utilize a peaceful color scheme that will appeal to their patients. They make sure that their patients are not scared by harsh lights, loud voices and arrays of threatening equipment.

Of course, the child will be much more cooperative if the pediatrician is known to him or her. That is why it would be wise to register newborns with a reputable pediatrician as soon as possible. If the child is taken to the specialist for routine examinations they will grow familiar with the process and they will be much easier to treat if they should become ill.

Every child should have a thorough pediatric physical exam on a regular basis. Once children fall ill they can become very ill in a short time span. Children should receive professional medical attentions as soon as it becomes clear that they are actually ill.
